Dolores Carmona, a charming, joyful, and resilient woman, spent most of her first 70 years on the island of Puerto Rico. Alongside her husband, son, and daughter, she built a life steeped in the vibrant culture and warm community of her homeland. However, fate dealt a harsh blow in September 2017. Hurricane Maria, a Category 5 storm, unleashed its fury upon the island, leaving behind a trail of destruction. Dolores resided in the small town of Ceiba, nestled in the northeast corner of Puerto Rico. As the hurricane’s aftermath unfolded, she found herself in a completely devastated and isolated community, without electricity and potable water. In the face of adversity, Dolores along with her daughter and granddaughter made a difficult decision: it was time to leave their cherished island. They sought refuge on the mainland United States, hoping for a fresh start—a chance to heal and rebuild. They have been residing in Rochester, New York, for about 6 years now. Here, they have discovered a welcoming and supportive community, along with organizations like the Ibero-American Action League (IBERO), which has assisted them in settling down and enriching our region with their charisma, joy, and resilience.
